How to Choose the Right Grooming Arm and Clamp for Your Table

3 min read

A grooming arm is only as safe as the clamp holding it. Pair the wrong clamp with your table and you get an arm that wobbles, slips, or won't tighten down at all. Get it right and you have a steady, secure setup you won't think twice about.

The good news is that picking the right combination takes about two minutes once you know what to look for. Here's how to match Groomer Essentials arms and clamps to your table, your clients, and your budget.

How to shop for the right grooming arm and clamp

Step 1: Check Your Table

Everything starts with your grooming table. Grab a tape measure and check the thickness of the tabletop edge where the clamp will grip. Your table will fall into one of three groups.

Standard tabletop (up to 1.25" thick). This covers most folding tables and many hydraulic and electric tables. You can use either Groomer Essentials standard clamp, the Economy or the Premium. Go to Step 2.

Thick or framed tabletop (more than 1.25" thick). Many electric and lift tables have thicker tops or frames that a standard clamp can't grip. You'll need the Groomer Essentials Premium Universal Clamp, which fits tabletops up to 3-1/4" thick. Then skip ahead to Step 3 to choose your arm.

Table with built-in arm holes. Some tables have holes built in for arms. Check what size they are:

  • Holes sized for 1" square tubing: you don't need a clamp at all. Any Groomer Essentials arm drops right in, so go straight to Step 3.

  • Holes smaller than 1" square tubing: mount a Premium Universal Clamp on the table's edge instead, then choose your arm.

Step 2: Choose Your Clamp

If your table is 1.25" thick or less, it comes down to how hard your clamp has to work.

Groomer Essentials Economy Clamp: 2 points of contact. Two bolts on an extra-wide gripping surface give a secure hold for everyday grooming. A spring clip and tightening knob keep the arm from dropping, and an inside top cover protects your table's finish. It's a dependable, budget-friendly choice for regular clients.

Groomer Essentials Premium Clamp: 4 points of contact. It has twice the bolts of the Economy Clamp across a wide contact surface. If you regularly groom large dogs, strong pullers, or dogs that like to test their limits, the Premium Clamp is built to keep your arm exactly where you put it. It has the same spring clip, tightening knob, and protective top cover.

Groomer Essentials Premium Universal Clamp: for tables up to 3-1/4" thick. It's a heavy-duty four-bolt design made for thick and framed tabletops, and it has the same spring clip and top cover as the standard clamps.

Step 3: Choose Your Arm

Every Groomer Essentials arm is made from 1" square tubing, so every arm fits every Groomer Essentials clamp. You don't have to worry about mismatched parts. Your choice comes down to material and how you work.

Groomer Essentials Economy Arm. This painted steel arm adjusts from 12" to 40", so one arm handles everything from toy breeds to tall dogs. It's solid, simple, and ready for daily use.

Groomer Essentials Premium Arm. This 14-gauge stainless steel arm resists rust in wet, busy salons and holds up to years of heavy use. It has the same 12" to 40" adjustment as the Economy Arm. It's the arm to choose if your grooming space sees a lot of water, a lot of dogs, or both.

Groomer Essentials Overhead Arm. Two steel arms support an overhead bar with seven eye bolts. You can secure a dog from above at multiple points, which helps with dogs that sit, spin, lean, or drop their weight during a groom. It fits tables 25" to 48" long and has a painted finish.

Important: The Overhead Arm needs a clamp on each end, so plan on two clamps (Economy, Premium, or Universal, depending on your table). Clamps are sold separately.
